Project-meeting in Cyprus 01.05.2006 - 08.05.2006

After the very successful meetings of the partners in the project CLAY in SCHROBENHAUSEN GERMANY and in BARI, ITALY the third meeting took place in AGIOS ATHANASIOS, CYPRUS from May 1st – 8th ,2006. In this meeting, the partners were Roland Schneidt and Werner Friedl (Germany) Antonio Pacifico and Maria D’Aprile (Italy) Antonio Leite (Portugal as a candidate partner for next year) Panicos Athanasiou, Andreas Paschalides and George Georgiou (Cyprus).
The Agios Athanasios Municipality offered a welcome dinner to the partners on Tuesday May 2, 2006 and the Mayor Mr. Kyriakos Hadjittofis officially accepted the visitors at the Municipality on May 3, 2006. There was a briefing to the Mayor about the project and the work done by the partners. The Mayor expressed his appreciation and support to these kind of collaborations and the obvious benefits for all the participants. Then he inform the partners about the Municipality of Agios Athanasios and it’s problems and exchanged gifts and information leaflets with the partners.
During the meeting, the partners presented their project work so far, asked questions and exchanged views on a variety of subjects. Mr. Schneidt explained to the other partners how all their work could be loaded in the work-space on the website (www.fvls.de) and put into a CD or a booklet. There was also a coordination of the activities for next year, when another 3 candidates, Portugal, Lithuania and Greece are expected to be successful in taking part into the project.
During the visit, there has been the opportunity of a wide coverage on natural, historical and cultural environment of Agios Athanasios, Limassol and generally Cyprus. There were common excursions and field studies with members of our community to the area of Agios Athanasios, Amathus, Limassol Carnage, Akrotiri, Paphos, Akamas, Choirokoitia, Nicosia (Museum, Green Line and Handicraft Center), Larnaca, Agia Napa and Famagusta Cultural Center.
On Wednesday May 3, 2006 the Municipality organized an open presentation with the 5 schools in the area of Agios Athanasios (a Lyceum, 2 Gymnasiums and 2 Elementary Schools) of their extra curriculum works regarding the quality of life and the European dimension. Most of these works were supported and subsidized by the Municipality and the aim of this presentation was to award the schools and promote this kind of work by the pupils.
All the partners took part in the presentation and addressed the people giving some information about their countries and their project work.
‘Cyprus is a diamond on the hand of Europe’ Mr. Schneidt said, but is far from Europe and needs the help of the other countries and their experience especially on sustainable development, new technologies, presentation of the environment, energy regulation and on many other fields.
The conclusion of this meeting is that we need each other and by the help of these programs everybody can contribute more or less to the family of Europe of which all we are members and affected by the others. More information and awareness is needed so that people be more active citizens in facing the rapidly increasing problems of the future.
