The program GRUNDTVIG concerns the life-long education for adults. Just after the announcement of this program by the Cyprus National Agency SOCRATES, the Municipality of Agios Athanasios organized a preparatory meeting in Cyprus from September 17-24, 2004 for developing a project concerning adult education and especially on environmental problems.
This project was named C.L.A.Y. (Cooperative Learning by Ambiental ActivitY) but only three countries were sSuccessful for the first year, Germany, Italy and Cyprus although 8 partners had applied .applied. Aim of this project C.L.A.Y. is the information and awareness of the puplic so that people will be sensitive and realize the seriousness of the eminent problems that increasingly affect the in quality of life. For this purpose, the Municipality formed the GRUNDTVIG Group which with the help of governmental organizations, as well as some specialist (many of which they live in our region) will collect useful information, produce leaflets, give lectures and organize seminars, visits for field studies e.t.c. All these activities and the activities of the other partners can be found in the website of our municipality (http://www.agiosathanasios.org.cy and http://www.fvls.de ); also in CD/ booklet which will be produced during summer 2006. The municipality has called all those who can help more or less to join the GRUNDTVIG Group.
The municipality sponsors and helps all the schools in its area to produce extra curriculum projects regarding the quality of life and the European Dimension and present them to our puplic thus, using the young people to teach the old. Such a presentation of many of the excellent works of our schools was organized at the Cultural Center of the Municipality on May 3, 2006 in order to incite the adults. Our partners from Germany, Italy and Portugal were present at the event and addressed the audience giving some details about their countries and their activities. During the presentation the schools were given some awards for promoting such work by their pupils and this will be repeated every year. We expect that these pupils will, when they grow up, play an important role in adult education in the future.
The aim of our activities for the first year of the project was first to give general information about the natural, historicalsocial economics and cultural (environment). For this purpose field studies were organized to Troodos, Akamas, Limassol , Nicosia and Larnnaca - Famagusta area. Some of our partners took part and expressed their enthusiasm for Cyprus heritage, as well as the need for preservnting the Cyprus environment . But the two main subjects that we focused ourfocused our attention were the G.M.O and Energy.
