CLIMATE CHANGES


The municipality of Agios Athanasios held a meeting on 22/1/2008 at its cultural Center regarding Climate Changes .


This event was within the framework of the European LLP (Lifelong Learning Program)/GRUNTDVIG, CLAY-project, the aim of which is the awareness and sensitivity of the people regarding the quality of life and the protection of the environment .
Drawings of the pupils of the elementary school of Linopetra referring to the environment, were exposed also in the room.
First,the coordinator of the project Mr. Panicos Athanasiou explained the aim of the project and referred to the work done so far by the partners form Greece, Italy and Germany.
The Mayor of Agios Athanasios Mr. Kyriacos Hadjittofis said that the Municipality is doing continuous effort to show the dangers about the environment and stressed the need for immediate action .
The main presentation of the subject was made by Dr. I. Ierides , Secretary of CYMEPA (Cyprus Maritime ?environment Protection Association)
First he mentioned the aim of CYMEPA and its activities. He said also that CLIMATE CHANGES take place for many years and the causes are internal and external ones. The main cause is Global warming because of the draught 1.000.000 people are going to die during the next years. Also the level of sea water will rise , large areas of land will be covered with water, the environment and the life of many people will be affected. The main reason for global warming is human activity because of the use of thefuels , the land and the aerosols . Animals also liberate 18% of gases in the atmosphere while transportation is only responsible for 13.5%.
Also, methane which comes out of the decomposition or organic materials, its 296 times more effective than the CO2 .

At the end Dr. Ierides said that the directives of the EU for reduction the global warming are:
- Keep the global warming under the 2 °C
- Reduction of the gas emissions from the developed countries by 30% until 2020 and by 60-80% until 2050, compared to emissions of 1990
- Help to the developing countries
- Selling of CO2 in all countries
- Promote Cooperation for research and development of new technologies
- Cooperation to face the impact of climate chances to pour countries
- Protection of the forests.

His closing mottos were: LIMIT-REDUCE-RECYCLE-WALK –CHANGE
Dr. Ierides answered many interestjng questions of the audience at the end of his presentation.
