The water in the region Orestiada |
|
|
Water consists the ultimate good in nature for man because it can sustain us in life. Admittedly, people can survive without food for a couple of days but not without water.
The river Ardas
Water can be linked to the development of civilization. This fact alone explains why humans have always preferred to build their cities and villages near rivers, lakes and/or seas. Water is also used as an energy source, it is an element that contributes to the natural beauty of the landscape and, notwithstanding, it also contributes to the public and goods transportation.
Water shortage and its littering consist two of the most controversial issues of the new millennia. Water resources all over the world are not sufficient enough to cover the humankind’s water needs in the 21st century. The specialists warn that a ‘revolution’ may be called forth targeting at the wise management of water sources, unless proper measures are taken for the abortion of such a situation. It is claimed that wars in the not-too-distant future will be declared in the name of water and that the problem will become more intense in the developing and under-developed world where the combination of an ever-growing population, pollution and scarce education have already caused problems in this area.
We study the origin, the treatment and quality as well as the consumption of water in our region.
Specifically, we investigate the following points:
1. the origin of water in our region: rivers, large wells and underground water.
2. the treatment and use of water for industrial, agricultural and domestic purposes.
3. the quality of water: chemical make up, hardness, pH, microbiological constitution, the quality of mineral water through water measurements.
4. the consumption of water: in the domestic, agricultural and industrial fields and the effect of that use to the environment.
Our findings are compared with similar ones from neighboring countries including Bulgaria and Turkey and advertisements are produced with respect to the importance of water in every aspect of our daily lives. Our aim is to make useful suggestions for the rational use and saving of water resources and to develop an array of strategies that could possibly be adopted by European countries on the face of water problems concerning flooding, littering of water and water drainage.
